| Front Cover | Norway’s Communic have received fast recognition and gained much respect in the modern metal scene; hell Nuclear Blast liked them so much they offered the band a seven album deal.
So after releasing a very critically acclaimed debut it was always going to be an interesting experience to see what tricks they would have up their sleeve for a follow up. Listening to ‘Waves Of Visual Decay’, what first becomes apparent is the clarity in sound, with the drums having a very warm yet pounding delivery and the guitars being moulded into the mix without losing the squeal of the leads or crystalline quality of the clean parts.
This album centres in straight heavy metal in the vein of Dio and Iced Earth but introducing progressive elements without losing sight of a cohesive song structure. ‘Fooled By The Serpent’ displays a contrast in conveying heavy riffs, crushing percussive frolics and charming melody whilst the riff driven opener ‘Under A Luminous Sky’ being an archetypal example of a catchy metal song to get the blood pumping.
Oddleif’s vocals are certainly a notable asset in Communic’s sound placing his vocal range through the paces, whilst offering repressed shrieks and heartfelt power. Whilst their debut ‘Conspiracy In Mind’ could’ve been comparable to bands such as Nevermore, ‘Waves Of Visual Decay’ ups the ante in terms of sheer originality without sounding disjointed.
